Holborn Unlocked – student exhibition on bicycle parking design solutions

holborn_unlocked
Holborn Unlocked (May 2007) student exhibition on bicycle parking design solutions, Lethaby II Gallery, CSM, London.
Curators: Gamman, L. and Thorpe, A.

This exhibition presented design responses catalysed by a Bikeoff studio project run with MA Industrial Design at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design. The project was launched with a seminar day that included presentations from public sector bike parking providers, architects, sound researchers, designers for public space and local government disability officers. The aim of the project was to get students to consider how cycle parking design could address the needs and desires of multiple users – not just cyclists – and potentially contribute to place-making, way-finding and regeneration, whilst reducing the risk of bicycle theft. No small order, but the exhibition inspired sophisticated design responses and the students collaborated to produce a provocative exhibition that was open to the general public via the Lethaby II Gallery. The exhibition opening was attended by local stakeholders and designers and cycle parking providers from further afield. The ambitious designs catalysed from this project, posters, 3d models, films and other forms of visualised researched, generated a useful debate about the potential for cycle parking to make a positive contribution to the streetscape.
