Brighton and Hove CIVITAS Project 2008

Practice led research with Brighton and Hove City Council, and the Cities Cycle Theft Steering Group has fed into a successful multi-million pound funding application to “develop cleaner and better transport in cities” as part of the EU funded CIty-VITAlity-Sustainability project (CIVITAS). Members of the Bikeoff team will extend Bikeoff practice led research activity across the city between 2008-2012. Findings will be disseminated amongst European CIVITAS partners.

Boris Johnson recognises the work of Bikeoff

“The caMden stand is a great example of the type of innovative solution to crime that can be made reality given the right support. As Mayor… I firmly believe that if we drive out so called minor crime, such as bike theft, then we will be able to get a firm grip on more serious crime. In the process we will also make cycling in London more attractive, which will help to improve the environment for all of us. I’ve asked Transport For London to do all they can to support such initiatives.” (Boris Johnson, May 2008).

Also, Dr. Kulveer Ranger, Director of Transport Policy for the GLA has said: “It is great that this multi-agency approach is working to bring design forward into dealing with a real problem for cyclists and the cycling community whilst at the same time being innovative in the approach” (September 2008). Rhiannon Hill (Dr. Ranger’s assistant) shared Bikeoff research to assess bike hire schemes planned for London.

Broxap Anti-Theft Stand
Adam Thorpe and Lorraine Gamman participated in many media events taking about their Bikeoff research that generated the new Broxap anti bike theft bike stands located in Camden. The stands were featured by Design Technology Alliance/Design Council to mark Home Secretary’s launch of Home Office’s design out crime initiative. Thorpe and Gamman were also interviewed on BBC Radio 4, the Today Programme, BBC National Lunch Time News and Design Council Film as benchmark design against crime.

Adam Thorpe’s account of how to design out bike theft and latest Bikeoff designs was also subsequently covered by Korean and Mexican TV .
