picture-14

AHRC (2008). Fighting Crime Through More Effective Design. Brochure. Swindon: AHRC. The document communicates the impact of Arts And Humanities research and was published in 2008 on the AHRC website and was one of a series of exemplar case studies. It includes DACRC’s Bikeoff project and describes the public benefits, human capital and contributions to design of the project. It also includes, thanks to an assessment by Price Waterhouse Cooper (PWC), projected future economic “benefit to Society” calculations.

London bike park ‘one of the safest in world’

A LONDON bicycle park has been selected as one of the world’s best examples of cycle safety.

The £675,000 site in Stroud Green Road, Finsbury Park, has space for 130 bikes. It has 24 hour CCTV, automated locking cycle racks, and a smartcard entry system for riders, who pay 50p per day for the service.

Lloyd’s of London was also singled out at the same exhibition for its staff bike parking facilities, which feature a hi-tech swipe card entry system.

The bike safety show at New London Architecture, in central London, showcases the latest breakthroughs in security. The designs, such as a “folding handlebar” that can be locked to stop the bike being turned, are concepts designed by students.

It comes as Transport for London figures show cycling increasing and theft decreasing for the first time this decade.

The event is part of the Bikeoff initiative run by Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, and backed by TfL and the Met. Rose Ades, head of the TfL Cycle Centre of Excellence, said: “There is still a long way to go, but Bikeoff is making a difference.”

Teens in Swansea Restore Bikes for Children in Need

mr_x_bikes_11logo_swansea
Teenagers from the Swansea Youth Offending Service’s Youth Justice Centre are using their new found bicycle maintenance skills to help the Swansea MR X Christmas appeal.

They have transformed bikes recovered by police to provide gifts for more than 4,000 local children in need.

The Centre helps young people at risk steer their future away from crime and as part of that work it has been offering young people the chance to gain an Open College Network (OCN) qualification in Bicycle Maintenance. The aim is to give them a skill which they can use in their everyday life and also to help their communities.

The project involves repairing and restoring unclaimed stolen or recovered bicycles which were donated by Gwynedd Youth Offending Service and Wrexham Police.

So far 19 bikes have been repaired and restored by the young people, all be donated to the Swansea Mr “X” Christmas Appeal.

BikeOff! thinks it’s a great way to get offending teens on the right track, and show them that they can make a positive impact on society. At the same time, promoting cycling to those who are less fortunate.

Bike Hire Scheme (coming to a town near you…)

800px-london_underground_zone_1_with_street_map
A new cycle hire scheme is due to be introduced to central London in 2010, similar to the successful Vélib scheme in Paris.

The scheme will allow you to pick up a cycle at a docking station, use it as you like, and then return it to any docking station.

Initially, cycles will be available in an area approximately equivalent to fare Zone 1 in central London, although the area may be enlarged and the number of docking stations and cycles increased in future.
