Seat Lock Concept

This design by RBAid’s was the winning entry in the Core 77 (the online design magazine and resource) 1 Hour Design Challenge to design a theft proof bike. The intuitive solution integrates a retractable cable lock into the seat post. The Seat Lock embraces and exploits the behaviour that people are already engaged in i.e. removing your seat and locking your bike to protect the bike and its easily removed components. This solution was deemed the best of many entries to the competition. It's well worth taking a look at the others for inspiration on the diversity of solutions to the ‘how best to lock a bike’ question.

Strengths
• Simple process
• Incorporates lock into the bike so the user does not have to carry potentially heavy locks

Weaknesses
• Only a concept
• Cable is going to have to be thin to fit inside the seat post, making it easier for a thief to cut
