Signage and communication for parking users
- Bicycle parking facilities should be appropriately signed to encourage use.[1]
- When not visible from the street, bicycle parking should be signposted.[2]
- Publicise the availability and location of bicycle parking in marketing, advertising and informational pamphlets.[3]
- New facilities may require a promotional campaign in order to establish regular users.[4]
- In the U.K. if signs are used within the highway they must comply with Department of Transport's Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 2002.[5] The signs manual has a series of prescribed signs for cycle parking on the public highway. Away from the highway a company or organisation's house style may be used (see image 1 abve).[6] However, the benefit of using recognised highway signs, or a conventional standard to the establishment concerned, is that it carries the image of a planned and managed scheme.[7] [8]
- Where there may be doubts as to owner's risk, for example at railway stations, special signs indicating associated risks are required.[9]
- It is highly desirable to make the method of use of cycle parking facilities obvious, perhaps using a display panel. Signs and user information can promote good practice, both in terms of consideration (do not lock through another bike), safety (avoid obstructing passageways) and security (advise on locking detachable parts).[10]Cyclists should ensure that quick release wheels are securely locked.[11]
- For lockers, information should be given on how to hire and use them.[12]
Signage and communication considering other users of the space
- [Lay] tactile surfaces around cycle parking provision.[13]
- If planned parking is to be incorporated into a new streetscape or highway scheme then thought should be given to highlighting the presence of the 'parking area footprint' with a change in surface colour or texture. This emphasises the area to both potential users and visually impaired pedestrians.[14]
