Wheel Stands

Domestic wheel stands are common solution and are mainly intended for use in a garage or areas with free floor space. They keep bikes upright and prevent them from being leaned against a wall or laid on the floor. Wheel stands are often able to accommodate more than one bike and can sometimes be attached to a wall. They offer little additional security compared to a bike leant against a wall.

Typical Context of Use
Garages, back gardens, store rooms, patios and under domestic shelters. Installation: Many stands do not require installation, only assembly. Some stands require fixing to the wall/floor
.

Number of Bikes per Unit
From 1 to 4.

Approximate Cost per Bike
from £15.99 - £30+.

Locking Opportunities / Lock Compatibility
Bad – only the wheel can be locked to most models. Wheel stands offer little to no secure locking opportunities and assume that they will be located within locked premises. Many wheel stands do not fix to the ground. Any type of lock can be used but it is only likely to secure the wheel of the bike to the stand.

Ease of Use / Time to Lock
Typically very easy to use. As long as the gap between the ‘wings’ can accommodate the bikes tyre / wheel width.

Strengths
• Low cost
• Simple installation / assembly
• Suitable for bike repairs
• Supports a wide range of bicycles
• Some stands are foldable and portable

Weaknesses

• Large footprint in use offers little in terms of space saving
• Offers no storage opportunities for clothes and accessories
