Posts
Posts can offer convenient and stable short stay parking. Typically they allow one wheel to be locked to the stand and prevent the bike from falling or being knocked over while parked.
Typical Context of Use
Open Access or Semi Restricted Access. Short stay urban areas, commercial precincts, park, Business and Educational premises etc... Installation: fixing bolts into ground surface sunken shaft into concrete.
Typical Length of Stay
Short-Medium (0-5 hours)
Number of Bikes per Unit:
1-2 bikes
Approximate Cost per Bike
£25-£120+ (to basic cycle locker system to high tech security system).
Locking Opportunities/ Lock Compatibility
Good - one wheel and frame (most models). Sometimes with both wheels / All types.
Ease of Use/Time to Lock:
Typically very easy to use. Locking times can vary from <30sec to a couple of minutes if stands are crowded and more than one lock is being used.
Strengths
• Maintenance costs are virtually nil
• Lifetime: 5-30 years, depending on finish and context of use
• Relatively cheap cost
• Supports a wide range of bicycles
Weaknesses
• For the posts: stands allow users to resort to poor locking techniques, i.e. only locking the wheel. It is very easy for a bike to be locked incorrectly
