Two-Tier Racks
Double tier parking systems are designed for dense cycle parking where space is limited and demand is high. They can be simpler to use than they look.
Typical Context of Use
Semi Restricted Access. Workplace and Leisure sites, Car parks, Basements, Transport Interchanges etc.
Typically used in off-street environments but occasionally found in on-street location. Installation: fixing bolts into ground and wall surface
Typical Length of Stay
Med-Long (2-8+ hours).
Number of Bikes per Unit
2 bikes or 4 bikes.
Approximate Cost per Bike
From £200 - £270 (and more for 4 bikes unit).
Locking Opportunities / Lock Compatibility
Good - two wheels and frame
All types of locks.
Ease of Use / Time to Lock
The lower track is of easier access, although generating some locking issues (very difficult to reach the front wheel). The upper tier is more complex to access and offer limited locking opportunities.
Locking times range between 2 and 6 minutes.
Strengths
• The double tier parking system allows a near doubling the capacity of a bike parking area
• Available in single units or racks hence very versatile for different space layout solutions
• 10-20 years
Weaknesses
• Time of use/access and locking opportunities are the main issues reported by users
• Height of ceiling and services is often a limit for the installation of the system
• Usage footprint is much greater than furniture dimensions
