Wheel Stands

'Butterfly’ or wheel stands are best used for short stay parking, located within sight of the owner or ‘capable guardians’. There are various types which range from single wall mounted versions to floor racks for 8 or more bikes. In interior contexts, such as surveyed lobbies, they provide a simple and tidy way to store bikes. They are not recommended for unattended public space due to poor locking opportunities.

Installation: uses fixing bolts into concrete ground or wall.

Typical Context of Use
Semi-restricted access. Surveyed, private or semi-private areas. Residential, workplace, school entrances etc. Variants also found on commuter trains. Installation: Fixing bolts into concrete ground surface or wall
.

Typical Length of Stay
Short/Medium.

Number of Bikes per Unit
1 per ‘wheel stand’ but typically 4 or more.

Approximate Cost per Bike
From £35 to £120.

Locking Opportunities / Lock Compatibility
Bad – only wheel or frame.
All types of locks

Ease of Use / Time to Lock
Typically very easy to use except when crowded. Locking times are minimal as it is only the wheel to lock.

Strengths
• Stand takes up very little space when unoccupied
• Quick and easy to access
• No maintenance
• 5-15 years, depending on finish and context of use
• Cost effective way to provide low security parking spaces for a large number of bicycles.

Weaknesses

• Provides no way of locking the frame or other wheel.
• Provides little or no stability if a bike is knocked.
• ‘wings’ are not vandal proof and susceptible to being bent
