Talking Heads design bike racks
I loved Talking Heads ‘Road to Nowhere’ – but David Byrne’s bling bling dollar sign as secure bicycle parking seems to me to be going in the same direction and less than cost effective in terms of sustainable use of resources. The bling bling tubular work will make the stands more expensive (certainly than our own secure caMden stands) and I am not convinced will promote secure cycling practice, or survive Art cliché in terms of a comment on New York. Too many artists have used the dollar sign to make a comment on American culture for me to be impressed – but then call me picky.

Shortlists for NY bike furniture competition
NYC bike lock, Lang & Dobbs
The finalists of the CityRacks Design Competition to design bike parking furniture for New York have been announced. We believe that Andrew Lang and Harry Dobbs ‘I ♥ NY’ entry should win as it encourages the user to lock their frame and both wheels in a similar fashion to our own caMden (M-Stand) stand. The stand also has a great New York feel, it is obviously influenced by the iconic I ♥ NY logo.

Boris Johnson recognises the work of Bikeoff

“The caMden stand is a great example of the type of innovative solution to crime that can be made reality given the right support. As Mayor… I firmly believe that if we drive out so called minor crime, such as bike theft, then we will be able to get a firm grip on more serious crime. In the process we will also make cycling in London more attractive, which will help to improve the environment for all of us. I’ve asked Transport For London to do all they can to support such initiatives.” (Boris Johnson, May 2008).

Also, Dr. Kulveer Ranger, Director of Transport Policy for the GLA has said: “It is great that this multi-agency approach is working to bring design forward into dealing with a real problem for cyclists and the cycling community whilst at the same time being innovative in the approach” (September 2008). Rhiannon Hill (Dr. Ranger’s assistant) shared Bikeoff research to assess bike hire schemes planned for London.
