Holborn Unlocked – Storage And Security: Bikes (2006/2007)

Project run with MA Industrial  Design students at Central Saint Martins (Course Director: Ben Hughes). The project was created by Gamman and Thorpe, the students were asked to research and document a visual narrative relating to issues of crime in and around cycle parking and storage facilities and to create proposals for a secure cycle parking facility to be located in the Southampton Row / Theobald’s Road site. Solutions could have been high-tech or lo-fi, depending on designers strengths, aspirations, and understanding of the problems. This project is about addressing the needs of cyclists and the behaviour of cycle thieves in the context of the College, and the Holborn Gateway area of the City. The aim was to design a functional, attractive and secure bicycle parking facility in this area.

Islington cycle theft awareness project 2007

In the Spring/Summer of 2007 Bikeoff worked with the London Borough of Islington in the design and delivery of an educational campaign to encourage cyclists to lock their bikes more securely. The campaign applied the projects research knowledge to the design of print advertising, cinema advertising and ‘on bike stand’ communication.

Domestic Bliss: Indoor Bike Storage (2007)

picture-21

Project run with MA Industrial Design (Course Director: Ben Hughes), Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design and created by Lorraine Gamman and Adam Thorpe.

Students were asked to research and document a visual narrative relating to issues of secure cycle ‘parking’ and storage in the home and to create proposals for a cycle parking/storage facility suitable for the types of dwelling common in London. This had to address the needs of cyclists, but also the relevant health and safety and usability aspects.

The brief can be downloaded from the domestic bliss website

Love your bike? Then lock it right!
TdF rolls into town this weekend, all those lovely bikes! But for those of us not fortunate enough (or fast enough?) to have several bikes and a backup team to keep us on the road Bikeoff reminds you that if you love your bike then lock it up right – both wheels and the frame to an immovable object!

On the subject of loving your bike – this Sunday you can go down to the Design Museum on London’s South Bank and publicly declare your love for your ride. Cyclists will be filmed saying why they love their bikes. Design Museum, London, Sunday 8th July, 2007 http://www.designmuseum.org/talks.

Bikeoff did something similar on Valentines day earlier this year – see some of the results of ‘I love my bike because…’here.

Holborn Cyclestation

Working within a consortium including Cyclestation Ltd and Tiguri Ltd, Bikeoff were commissioned by Holborn Business Partnership and London Borough of Camden to deliver a scoping study and design recommendation for the design and development of a secure indoor cycle parking facility. Bikeoff’s research knowledge was significant in identifying a number of issues relating to the proposed development and generating alternative design proposals – proving the robustness of Bikeoff design guidance in the assessment and development of secure bike parking design proposals.
