Cycle Centre
Mcdonnald’s Millennium Park (Chicago US)

m
An overground covered McDonald’s Cycle Center, Millennium Park, Chicago (bicycle parking, showers, lockers, cycle rental and repair). Parking is provided for up to 300 bicycles. During the day, the access ponit is manned by the staff; otherwise users have to use a key card during out of hours. Parking furniture is 2 tier racks (double decker) to maximise space. Users can park for as long as they wish.

Provider
Department of Transportation, City of Chicago

Designer / Architect
Muller & Muller Architects, David Steele (design), Jay Muller (principal in charge)

Cost of provision
$2.7m, £1.3m, €1.75m

Strengths
• Provides many services
• Parking is free and secure

Weaknesses
• The double-decker is not easy to use and offers little opportunity to lock a bike securely
• The centre, being ‘public’ but fixed, in its location is not accessible to as many people as if several smaller centres had been set up around the city
